Songs That Just May Suggest That You’re Crazy…

Just like a lot of people, when I want to unwind I light a candle, draw a warm bath and put on Pandora. So the other night, I did just that. I decided to turn on the R&B station and rock out. A few songs come on and I’m singing along like the songstress I am (just kidding…lol) and then I realize that some of these lyrics are borderline insane. Here are a few songs I found to be a bit disturbing. If you can relate to any of these songs…you just may be crazy!

Song #1: Adele “Someone Like You”

Adele is known for her many depressing songs (I still like her though) but this one seems to be a bit creepy. This song is so strange I had to include the lyrics:

I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now.
I heard that your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you.

Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light.
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
 But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded

That for me it isn't over.

Sooooo many things wrong with these lyrics, where do I start?! So if you heard that your ex is married and that his dreams came true, it may be safe to say he doesn’t want you. “Old friend, why are you so shy?” He’s probably not shy, just nervous to be around someone who is still stuck in the past! You said you hated to turn up uninvited but you did it anyway! If that isn’t stalkerish, I don’t know what is! It may not be over for you but it’s definitely over for him! Get yourself together, Adele, and FAST!

Song #2: Melanie Fiona “It Kills Me”

Melanie’s second sentence in the song says, “I can’t be alone…I know you’re messing around but who in the hell else is going to hold me down?” Clearly, he’s holding you and every other woman out there down. Bye, girl! Then she goes on to say, “I got to be out my mind to think it’s going to work this time.” Well, ma’am! Here’s a bright idea, don’t try to work it out this time! If it “kills you” to love someone, you’re loving the wrong person! Message!

Song #3: Beyonce “Dangerously In Love”

I know I’m going to catch all type of flak for this because no one is to EVER question Bey (yeah right) especially now that everyone is “drunk in love” and they “woke up like this”…*Shade*. But anyway, this song starts off crazy but the most disturbing part of this song for me is when Bey says, “I can’t do this thing called life without you.” Hunh? Run that back!! It’s NEVER that serious! The song is called DANGEROUSLY in love…case closed!

Song #4: Temptations “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”

Yes! The Temptation’s get it too! The very first line is “I know you want to leave me but I refuse to let you go.” Sir?! Refuse to let me go? You’re loco! So how do you plan on keeping me somewhere I do NOT want to stay?! You can do all the begging and pleading you want, but if someone is going to leave, they’re going to leave!

Song #5: Heather Headley “In My Mind”

I had to leave this song for last. Can you say CRAZY?! This song is the very reason why Heather Headley’s career didn’t take off like it should have! Y’all know the lyrics! “In my mind I’ll always be his lady, in my mind I’ll always be his girl.” Well, if that same thought isn’t in his mind as well, the relationship will never work. Heather said, “It don't matter either way what they do or say cause ain't nothing changed. He's standing with her but his soul is calling out my name.” Ma’am a whole lot has changed. He has moved on and you should try doing the same.

These were just a few songs that I thought to be unsettling.  What other songs do you find to be a bit disturbing?

28.

I've been 28 for 28 days! I've learned so much about myself this past year. How strong yet vulnerable I can be. How silly yet serious I can be. How focused yet lax I can be. It has taken time for me to grow into the woman I am and to love her.

The lesson that sticks out for me the most is just how precious my time is. Seems simple right?! We all know we have one life to live (thanks to the soap opera). But just think about that for a moment. My time (and yours) is too valuable to be wasted.  Others may not waste my time and I surely may not waste my own time. We are all on this earth for what seems like a blink of an eye.  No, you may not mock my time. You may not be in my life at your convenience. This goes for family, friends and relationships.  I refuse to harbor any ill feelings toward anyone. Heck! I don't have time for that either. I have time for the pleasantries in life as well as the pain that is going to stretch me to be a better me. I have time for becoming a better daughter, sister, friend and lover.

Time will tell who I will become in the future but I plan on spending it wisely!

Don't Be Afraid To Soar

As long as I can remember I always dreamt of traveling the world. As long as I can remember I've also had a fear of flying.  For the first 27 years of my life, this fear crippled me. I was confined to places I could only sail, drive or take a train to. I didn't realize just how much I was limiting myself.  Last month, I've mustered up the courage to take a flight. Boy, has it changed my life!

Although I'm talking in the literal sense, we can apply this to every aspect of our lives. So many times we've missed out on opportunities because of our fears. Some of us fear to trust others or God. Some of us fear to open up that business. Some of us fear being alone. Whatever the fear may be, it is something that was created. It does not exist.

Fear and faith cannot coexist. My pastor once said, "if it makes sense, it's probably not God!" Think about that! If something makes complete and perfect sense it doesn't require any faith. God wants us to put our trust and faith in him...mustard seed faith. "Fear not" is written in the Bible numerous times to remind us that no matter what we go through or whatever our fear is, it's never too big for God to solve.

Remember, God's got this!
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares The Lord, "plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Essence: There's Nothing Like It!

One word, two syllables, 7 letters...ESSENCE!!!! Now, I have been told about Essence for years by friends.  I heard the stars walk around common people meeting and greeting everyone. I heard that there were tons of great giveaways. I heard that the performances  in the Super Lounges and Main Stage were off the hook. In a nut shell, I was told that I needed to experience it for myself. This year, at the last minute, I decided to go. It was one of the BEST decisions I've made!

The Essence Music Festival is held every 4th of July weekend in New Orleans, LA. This year's headliner was Beyonce. She was in great company with, my all time favorite, Jill Scott, my favorite new artist, Alice Smith, New Edition, Maxwell, Charlie Wilson, Faith Evans, Trey Songz, TGT, Janelle Monae and the list goes on and on. Because there were so many performers there was no way for me to see them all. But the ones I did see we're AMAZING!!!

In the Super Lounge, I got to listen to an up and coming artist, Bridget Kelly. Never heard of her before but I was impressed. She was flawless in her appearance as well as musically! She gained a new fan! Immediately, after her, the one and only Faith Evans hit the stage! She looked stunning. Now I must admit, I was nervous to hear Faith. I've always loved her but didn't know how she would sound live. Well, let me tell you she shut me down! That woman can sing. An added bonus was when she brought THE Kelly Price out on stage! That is a whole 'nother post in itself! She has a voice like none other!

Can we just talk about Uncle Charlie for a minute?! Charlie Wilson is a 60 year old R&B icon! He tore up the stage like he was in his 20's. He did about 5 outfit changes...and of course they all sparkled, lit up or did something else extravagant. His dancers didn't miss a beat either. The band was simply incredible! But what else do we expect from Uncle Charlie?!

Jill Scott!!! Enough said right?! Anybody who knows me knows that Jill is my twin in my head! Lol!  Her soulful, sultry sound does something to me every time. She sang all of her classic numbers and when I say sang I mean saaaannnnggg!!! Not only did she scat, hum and groan but she did it effortlessly! The woman is talented! Don't know about her, you better ask somebody!

The convention center had different speakers and panels. There were plenty of free giveaways. There were seminars such as, Jobs in America, How to be Happy with Iyanla Vanzant and so many more. I also got to see Steve Harvey in action while he hosted the Steve Harvey  Morning Show and Family Feud. In the convention center there were also vendors selling art, clothing and jewelry. They also had vendors selling some of Nawlins best foods.

Speaking of food, I had gumbo, crawfish, jambalaya, shrimp and grits and much more ( Yea I know! I'm hitting the gym)! You mad?! Lol! It was all delish! I went to Dooky Chase's, one of the oldest soul food restaurants in the Big Easy! Also went to Poppy's Time Out! on the River Walk at least 3 times! They had a drink called voodoo...well, you know the rest! Hypnotized! I ate at Mother's, the Trolley Stop and a great deal of other scrumptious places.

To sum it up, if you love music, food and entertainment, Essence is where you want to be! My friends told me it was something I needed to experience and now I am telling you the same thing! It's a must!

It's All About Preparation

Preparation-
1.  the action of making ready or being made ready for use
2. something done to get ready for an event or undertaking

You know the story about Jonah and the Big Fish, right (read Jonah 1:17 if you're unfamiliar with the text)?! You know, God told Jonah to go to Ninevah and tell the people to turn from their wicked ways. Jonah didn't like what God had to say so he "ran" from God! (It's funny to me when we try to run from God knowing that God is everywhere!) Anyway, he asked a few sailors to take him to another city. A storm started brewing and Jonah told the men that he was the reason for the storm because God was upset with him. What did the sailors do?! They threw him off the boat! Now this is the good part! There was a PREPARED fish waiting to swallow Jonah! Jonah's other option was to sink to the bottom of the ocean but God prepared a fish to save his life. Where did the Big Fish spit Jonah out...Ninevah! Tell me God doesn't have a sense of humor?! Jonah could've gotten there the easy way when God told him to go.

What I find amazing is that the fish was prepared. It was already there waiting for Jonah. It did not have to swim a few miles to get to him. The fish's sole purpose in life was to swallow Jonah. In order to live out his purpose, he had to be prepared! He had to be at the right spot at the right time with his mouth wide open ready to catch Jonah!

This is what we need to do as well! Get prepared! Get ourselves in position for what God has in store for us. We cannot stay stagnant and expect to be blessed with what all God has for us. We have to do some work as well.

Also be mindful, that God may use other people/situations to prepare us for better. Even though it looks like a negative God is preparing us for a better positive. A bad breakup or the loss of a job are both examples of a "big fish". While you're going through the situation it seems like a negative but it could be God preparing you for your Ninevah.

Sometimes preparation does not come in the form of us working to get what we want. Occasionally,  it comes in the form of waiting. It is important for us to discern what kind of preparation we should be doing.  God is preparing us by stretching us and testing our faith. He only does this to prepare us for greater.

As always, remember, you are fearfully and wonderfully made!
Psalm 139:14

Single in the City

Being single has to be one of the most liberating feelings I have ever felt. Maybe it's because I can date whomever I choose whenever I choose. Maybe it's because I have recently gotten out of a 4 1/2 year relationship. Whatever the reason may be, I like this feeling. Here are a few tips that I have found useful being single in the city!

Be approachable. You know, smile every once and a while! Ask someone how they are doing. No one wants to become friends with a grouch! How are you ever supposed to meet anyone, friends or potential love, when you are mean mugging. You never know what that "small talk" may turn into.

Do things by yourself. I've been in Philadelphia for little over a year now. When I got here I didn't know many people. For at least two months, I was completely miserable because I would go to work and go straight home. I did nothing to make life exciting. I wanted to go and do things but I didn't have anyone to do them with! Then I remembered something my dad always told me. "Brandie, you came in this world by yourself, you are going to leave this world by yourself. You need to learn how to do things by yourself!" It was like a lightbulb had turned on in my head. Now, I will go to a concert, restaurant or movies by myself. I have met some pretty interesting people just being out and about alone.

Value the friendships that you already have. I consider myself to be a good friend. I take pride in that. Everyone does not possess that quality. Nurture the relationships that you have. Just think of them as practice for the man/woman  God is preparing you for.

Be a part of something. Join a gym or take up cooking classes! Learn a second (or maybe third) language. This is a great way to meet people who are interested in the same things as you are. Not only will you meet people but you are making yourself more well rounded.

Being single is often mistaken for being alone. Know the difference. Being single is not having a significant other. Being alone is being in a solitude state of seclusion. Just think, this season won't last forever! Embrace your singleness and enjoy it!

Remember, you are fearfully and wonderfully made! Psalm 139:14
